Arts and Creative Development
Our Arts and Creative Development Team comprises of specialist arts development officers and curators. We aim to promote and support a range of arts projects, initiatives and events that reflect the city’s diversity of cultural interests and arts practice.
The Arts & Creative Development Strategy 2008 – 2012 sets out to increase the capacity of Sunderland’s creative sector; to enable people to become more involved and to develop projects which enhance and contribute to the built environment.

Dance Development
As part of the Youth Dance England Initiative, the Arts and Creative Development Team are working with partners to support dance professionals, increase opportunities to participate in dance activity, and increase opportunities to see dance performances. Regular classes are available in a range of dance forms across Sunderland, together with bespoke projects.
Seaside Towns Development - Roker
As part of a wider coastal regeneration project, Sunderland City Council recently received support from the Government’s Sea Change Fund via the Department for Culture Media and Sport. This investment is to support:
- Cultural projects, which contribute to place making
- Arts projects, which provide new opportunities for local communities and visitors
- Improving the quality and the experience of the historic environment
- Improvements to the natural and built environment and public space.
The Arts & Creative Development Team will be delivering a cultural programme throughout 2011 that will consider all of these key priorities.
